Vacuum coatings are thin layers of material that are deposited on a surface while inside of a vacuum chamber. Common examples of vacuum coating applications are optical filters, and protective, decorative, and friction-reducing coatings.
It’s important that, after deposition, vacuum coatings have their intended properties. For some coatings this means that the thickness must be within a specific range. For others, it’s the final reflectance or transmittance spectrum that is important. Still others need to have a particular composition (as indicated by refractive index.)
